Auditions for ‘the Pirates of Penzance’ 2023

Auditions for Wellington Comic Opera’s ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ are taking place on 28 and 29 January 2023 at Te Whaea.  All roles are being auditioned.

Rehearsals for the show will run on Wednesday and Thursday nights (7.30-9.30) and Sunday afternoons (2.00-5.00) from late March, with performances on 12-21 May in Lower Hutt, Kapiti, Palmerston North, Wellington and Upper Hutt.

Alison Hodge is director and Michael Vinten music director. In addition to singing ability, they will be looking for personality and humour, and a willingness to take direction. They will be fully open and inclusive in their casting and will ensure that auditions are fun and welcoming.  They note that this will not be a traditional version of Pirates with updates to the setting and dialogue.

The roles and vocal ranges are as follows (C4=middle C):

  • Major-General Stanley (comic baritone) B2-G4
  • The Pirate King (bass-baritone) G2-D4
  • Samuel, his Lieutenant (baritone/tenor) G2-G4
  • Frederic, the Pirate Apprentice (tenor) D3-C5
  • Sergeant of Police (bass) G2-C4
  • Mabel (soprano) D4-D6
  • Edith (mezzo-soprano) C4-C6
  • Ruth, a Piratical Maid (Alto) F3-F5
  • Chorus of Pirates, Police and General Stanley’s Daughters

For an audition time, please email Ian Graham via You can use the same email if you have any questions or you are interested in auditioning but not available that particular weekend. If you are seeking a named role, it is expected that you sing a song appropriate to that role (ideally something from Pirates). You may be asked to deliver lines, perform moves, and/or sing from other passages in the opera, as requested by the Directors.
